Marriage Tip #44: Do What He Wants

I thought about our upcoming anniversary.   I prayed one morning for the marriages in my family, and a sentence about my own dropped in my spirit:  “Do What He Wants.”  I paused, “Really?”  He’s his own man.  What if I end up in the wilderness camping by night and target shooting by day?  What if a coyote decides to have me as a late night snack?

We celebrated our anniversary early this year,
Before the kids come next week.

And we did it his way.

This is how it happened.

I never asked him about a plan or even mentioned our day.  I remember how it all unfolded at the roundabout just as we drove into Sedona.  He asked me if I would like to go to a baseball game.  I responded excitedly, “Yeah!”  Before the day was over, he purchased tickets for a Diamondbacks home game. He printed them out.  He booked a hotel room so we wouldn’t have to drive home from the city after the late evening game.

He explained the Metro Light Rail system to me and how we can travel from the Wyndham to the baseball field. Fun adventure; a great way to people watch!

He’s an Alice Cooper fan so he suggested a late lunch in Cooperstown.

(I told God it’s gonna get weird and it did.)

It’s a sports bar with good food.  And stuff jocks and rockers like where the waitresses paint their faces like Alice.

The Diamondbacks beat the Brewers that night.

He didn’t rush me the next morning either.  We enjoyed the beautiful pool after breakfast.

I liked it all!  Best thing is I didn’t have to do a thing except pack my bag!

And that’s the story
Of how this good wife

 Celebrated her anniversary.

Any special plans in the works for you?

“Go and shout this message to Jerusalem. This is what the Lord says:

I remember how eager you were to please me
as a young bride long ago,
how you loved me and followed me
    even through the barren wilderness.”

Jeremiah 2:2

Our suite was on the top floor of the hotel with a deck covering the roof overlooking the city just like in one of my favorite classic movies, “Goodbye Girl” in the 70’s when (young) Richard Dreyfuss wows the girlfriend on the roof of his apartment building overlooking Manhattan.  The best scene!

  7. Well, congratulations to the both of you! And hey, sometimes *weird* is the very best of times, right?! One thing that I do to make my hubby happy is go to western festivals. I enjoy them, too, but they are really his very best times. Nothing beats seeing him dressed up as Virgil Earp!

And "Goodbye Girl"? One of my very favorite movies!

    GOD BLESS!

    1. Thank you so much for those wishes, Cheryl. He is a thoughtful man. It was crowded behind home plate but the seat next to me was empty so I didn’t have to compromise my weak knee. He offered to have me sit on his lap (no one behind him.) Very sweet, but I’m thankful for God’s grace & was never uncomfortable.

  12. Oh wow! I loved the photos but mostly that he did it all and you went along with it! I wish I could be more that way. Our 38th anniversary is coming up in Sept and just last night we were trying to decided what to do. I wanted something old and romantic, he wanted modern and efficient. He's thrifty, I want to once do something unpractical.

My husband and I will have our 30th anniversary on Sept. 21, and we usually go up to the Minneapolis area to see his brothers and sister, and go to the North Shore of Superior, b/c that's our favorite place. Anyhow, if my body and brain work, we'll try again, when and how he can get work of our church for about 4 days. Such a blessing to work things around and about with our dear ones. Bless you.

When we know God more we gain wisdom and wisdom shows in our actions. Happy Anniversary!

Because He Lives, I Can Move

I’m currently in one of those places where you lay out all the options and then you make the best decision. It seems, however, like none of the choices are fair or attractive. I know God will help me in my situation because I desire His guidance. I’m clinging to His Word which promises that ALL things work together for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. I heard a great teaching this week about seeking God’s will and all the freedom that surrender brings. We can know that God is bringing about a victory if we trust Him with each and every decision. The speaker illustrated his point with a famous painting. The painting depicts a look of despair on the chess player’s face. He’s playing Satan and his soul is at stake. It looks like Satan is winning. Checkmate! When Paul Morphy saw this painting back in the 1800’s, he set up a chess board and aligned the pieces to reflect the painting. Being a world champion, he studied the board. His conclusi

Humor for the Bride and Groom

A young couple decided to wed.  As the big day approached, they grew apprehensive.  Each had a problem they had never before shared with anyone, not even each other. The Groom-to-be, overcoming his fear, decided to ask his father for advice.   "Father," he said, "I am deeply concerned about the success of my marriage."  His father replied, "Don't you love this girl?"   "Oh yes, very much," he said," but you see, I have very smelly feet, and I'm afraid that my fiancé will be put off by them."  "No problem," said dad, "all you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed."   Well, to him this seemed a workable solution. The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to take her problem up with her mom."  Mom," she said, "When I wake up in the morning my breath is truly awful."  "Honey," her mother consoled, "everyone has

A Veteran's Story

I noticed Bill sitting in our local park where I walk.   He glanced my way just as I finished the last exercise walk song on my playlist.   He shouted and pointed to my car:   “Hey, is that your car with the Nam front license plate?   I stepped closer into the veranda where Bill sat on a picnic bench.   I noticed his Vietnam Vet cap and instantly I knew why I walked there that day.   The Marine Vet served during the 1960’s, the same time span as my husband.   Bill talked a lot about the war evoking my emotions from laughter to tears.   My South Vietnam front plate often prompts a conversation with a stranger and I’ve learned a deep respect for it over the years.   It is my way of listening to a veteran.   I enjoyed listening to Bill.   He made me laugh in spots but he made me cry as well.   Like when he talked about the sandwich lady.   “Do you ever eat at the sandwich shop in the gas station down the street?”   I replied that I’ve order coffee once in that place with a turke
