I thought about our upcoming anniversary. I prayed one morning for the marriages in my
family, and a sentence about my own dropped in my spirit: “Do
What He Wants.” I paused, “Really?” He’s his own man. What if I end up in the wilderness camping by
night and target shooting by day? What
if a coyote decides to have me as a late night snack?
We
celebrated our anniversary early this year,
Before the
kids come next week.
And we did it his way.
This is how it happened.
I never asked him about a plan or even mentioned our day. I remember how it all unfolded at the roundabout just as we drove into Sedona. He asked me if I would like to go to a baseball game. I responded excitedly, “Yeah!” Before the day was over, he purchased tickets for a Diamondbacks home game. He printed them out. He booked a hotel room so we wouldn’t have to drive home from the city after the late evening game.
He explained the Metro Light Rail system to me and how we can
travel from the Wyndham to the baseball field. Fun adventure; a great way to
people watch!
He’s an Alice Cooper fan so he suggested a late lunch in Cooperstown.
(I told God
it’s gonna get weird and it did.)
It’s a sports bar with good food. And stuff jocks and rockers like where the
waitresses paint their faces like Alice.
The Diamondbacks beat the Brewers that night.
He didn’t rush me the next morning either. We enjoyed the beautiful pool after
breakfast.
I liked it all! Best
thing is I didn’t have to do a thing except pack my bag!
And that’s
the story
Of how this
good wife
Celebrated her anniversary.
Any special plans in the works for you?
“Go and shout this message to Jerusalem. This is
what the Lord says:
“I remember how eager you
were to please me
as a young bride long ago,
how you loved me and followed me
even through the barren wilderness.”
as a young bride long ago,
how you loved me and followed me
even through the barren wilderness.”
Jeremiah 2:2
Our suite was on the top floor of the hotel with a deck covering
the roof overlooking the city just like in one of my favorite classic movies,
“Goodbye Girl” in the 70’s when (young) Richard Dreyfuss wows the girlfriend on
the roof of his apartment building overlooking Manhattan. The best scene!
Hi Mary! Wow! I'm thrilled for you dear heart! I bet your glad you listened to the still small voice...to Do what he wants! What a fun anniversary. My hubby and I went out for dinner. He'd been working so much that we didn't get to do anything else but that was a pleasure! I love your photos...you are both so very happy! That's the way Ms. Good wife!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi, Sue!
DeleteAt least you got to go to dinner, but did your wait staff paint their faces like Alice Cooper???? LOL. By any chance, are you a Brewers fan? Wishing you a great week; don't work too hard.
What a great post, and your photos are lovely! Such a great time! :)
ReplyDeleteHi, LInda!

ReplyDeleteHi, Lux!
DeleteYeah, relationships! Always something worth working at !
Bless you,
Mary
God bless you two with many more happy years. I love you.
ReplyDeleteI love you, too, Denise and am thrilled to see you up and writing again and feeling well. You go, girl.
DeleteAw, that's so sweet!!! thanks for being a good example of being a good husband and wife for our generation. Today, most people don't value marriage and life being together forever. I really admire this mary, Happy Anniversary!

also, I nominated you for an award, here's the URL:

Your comment made my day, Steve. And thanks for the nomination.
DeleteGod bless,
Mary
Well, congratulations to the both of you! And hey, sometimes *weird* is the very best of times, right?! One thing that I do to make my hubby happy is go to western festivals. I enjoy them, too, but they are really his very best times. Nothing beats seeing him dressed up as Virgil Earp!
ReplyDeleteAnd "Goodbye Girl"? One of my very favorite movies!
GOD BLESS!
I just knew you would understand the weird feelings, Sharon! You bless me big. I've seen Goodbye Girl four times.
DeleteHave a great week!
Mary
Eat your heart out, Richard Dreyfuss!
ReplyDeleteMr. God sure knew what He was doing when he sent you that message!
You and (your) Tom are such an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your special celebration.
Hi, Myra!
DeleteIt's not such a bad thing to celebrate an anniversary in mid summer in Phoenix right?
Big hugs,
Mary

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely warning from God for you to agree with what ever he wants. I am glad your anniversary turned out well, even an adventure at the sports bar. Thanks for sharing your lovely story with us here at Tell me a Story.
ReplyDeleteThis may have been a little *out of my league!* but that’s what makes a good story. Thanks for commenting; have a great week!
DeleteAww...what a sweet day the two of you had together! Your husband was probably so thrilled to do and plan all of this for you and to know that you were interested in what he wanted to do. So thoughtful of him...and you, too! God bless you both with many more happy years together!! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for those wishes, Cheryl. He is a thoughtful man. It was crowded behind home plate but the seat next to me was empty so I didn’t have to compromise my weak knee. He offered to have me sit on his lap (no one behind him.) Very sweet, but I’m thankful for God’s grace & was never uncomfortable.
DeleteOh wow! I loved the photos but mostly that he did it all and you went along with it! I wish I could be more that way. Our 38th anniversary is coming up in Sept and just last night we were trying to decided what to do. I wanted something old and romantic, he wanted modern and efficient. He's thrifty, I want to once do something unpractical.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you guys can meet somewhere in the middle? Opposites make for adventure and 38 years for you....lots of adventure. Like us.
DeleteI was excited to read that you finished your second book!!!!!! Super-duper.
O, this is a good post. Thank you so much. I'm going to follow your example ...
ReplyDeleteOk then. Maybe we need to start a Christian version of The Good Wives Club!
DeleteAs usual, you made people smile and rejoice. My husband and I will have our 30th anniversary on Sept. 21, and we usually go up to the Minneapolis area to see his brothers and sister, and go to the North Shore of Superior, b/c that's our favorite place. Anyhow, if my body and brain work, we'll try again, when and how he can get work of our church for about 4 days. Such a blessing to work things around and about with our dear ones. Bless you.
ReplyDeleteI hope your plans work smoothly so you can enjoy your upcoming 30th in your favorite place!
DeleteBless you,
Mary
What a sweet and precious post! You two love birds look so happy and I'm sure you'll have many more beautiful times together! I can feel your happiness!
ReplyDeleteYour prayers, I'm so thankful for, dear friend.
Hope you have a great day!
Nancy
Thank you, Nancy, for the wishes! I’m glad you’re on the mend and so fast!
DeleteHugs,
Mary
Awe...loved this post Mary! I couldn't help but laugh though that you sensed the words...DO HIS WAY! The things we do for those we love! So glad you had fun! Happy Anniversary to you both! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cindy, for the sentiments! I ask myself if I would have been open to his plan if I didn’t hear that divine nudge. Probably not. And I would have missed out greatly. Sigh.
DeleteHow cool is that!!! He's a good man. Funny thing about men; they get better with age... At least that's what I'm telling myself!
ReplyDeleteWhen we know God more we gain wisdom and wisdom shows in our actions. Happy Anniversary!
Vincent, Alice's real name, went to Cortez High School, just south of Metrocenter, but your hubby, and maybe even you be default, already knew that!
Thanks for the wishes. Wisdom is the reward for growing older and getting better! Love the trivia.
DeleteWishing you an awesome day!

ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Nikki, for stopping by and speaking such kind words over us!
ReplyDeleteHi Mary! You and your husband look so HAPPY! What a joyful time you had, including the giggle-inducing visit to the theme restaurant. "Do what he wants" always sounds like a bad idea, right? But you listened and had a wonderful celebration.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the Lord knew it all the time. Blessings to you and your husband on your anniversary!
Blessings,
Ceil
Welcome back, dear Ceil! Thanks for all the wishes!
DeleteLuv,

Finding this a bit after it was posted, but I still wanted to stop in and wish you and your hubby a belated happy anniversary. Loved this marriage tip!
