Another Summer’s End

The calendar tells me it’s Labor Day weekend and fall is right around the corner, but our Arizona temps are excessive with only mere raindrops since spring!   I’ll gladly wave goodbye to the sauna-like desert afternoons, and welcome the cool, comfortable nights of sleeping with stacked blankets.  My pots of flowers start to shrivel but I see faint orange Pyracantha buds ready to explode in color!   I’ll remember Covid summer, with challenges of keeping my mask in place during a haircut, waiting in long lines to enter Trader Joe’s, turned-off drinking fountains, closed restrooms and buying the right size jeans without trying them on.  Covid summer, you taught me to hold dear those things that never change like the strength of family and friendships, a God who still sits on His throne regardless if churches close and truth seekers who endure to the end.  Looking forward to you, autumn!

Memories of summer...

  1. Lovely description of end of summer!
A summer to be well remembered because of the coronavirus, and its additions to our life (see last photo with the masks on).
God and family are the constants in our life and we should indeed hold them dearly!

  2. Like it or not, like the old song goes, "We will have these moments to remember." Yours are wonderful photos, but darn it, Mary. Looking at that pie, my taste buds are going berserk. Happy Labor Day!

  3. Good morn sister Mary! I brought my own cup of joe so I can have coffee with you in that comfy backyard of yours! :) Lovely pics as usual but like what I had been saying to you, what always stands out among those pics is the love you share with your friends or family and especially love of God!!!Yes, lots to remember and this Covid that created a havoc not only here but all over the world. Never have I prayed so hard 'til this came. For the godly leaders, specially the President, for protection, for revival of rebellious hearts, but most of all for God's forgiveness. The spiritual enemy is ever so active with his gang but there is nothing he does that the Lord doesn't know. Our awesome Redeemer always saves and is always in control! Despite the hassle of wearing masks, I see lots of blessings from this covid that the Lord turned into good. Isn't that what we pray for anyway, right? To see through His eyes.

I can't wait for cooler weather sister Mary. I don't do well with heat especially with my sensitivity to it. There's a lot to like and love about Fall anyway!

Leaving a prayer now for you and your family. For the Lord to always strengthen u and bro. Tom and protect you all. God bless and love you in Christ. Your little grandchild is cute, not minding the trouble of having a mask. Despite the covers in your faces, you're all lovely!!! Now, my coffee is cold but that's ok. I'm leaving with a warm heart because your faith blessed mine.

    1. Your coffee may be getting cold, girlfriend, but I am in tears. Your words touch me and hold me up and make me want to write more for more connection with you! I love the way you pray; it's the way I pray asking for forgiveness. Prayer is a gift we can give to our nation right now, so in need of our prayer power. Sending you love and blessings this Labor Day and refreshment as the temperatures drop. Love you, Rosel.

  5. I'm ready for fall temperatures too. I can't believe we hardly got any rain. I wonder if we will make up for lack of rain by getting a ton of snow. You get snow there don't you? We get snow but not nearly as much Prescott. Well have a blessed Labor Day. I'm hoping to start sewing a dress today or at least cut it out.

    1. Right now, I love the thought of snow! Yes, we get it (lightly.) I wondered the same or at least lots of fall rains? Happy and blessed Labor Day to you, Regina.

  6. So wonderful to visit with you tonight, dear friend. May the Lord give us all strength to press forward, to pray without ceasing, and to continually stay in a state of readiness for His coming. I don't think it will be long, but then again, neither did the disciples. We never know, but the signs surely do declare that He is near. Sending much love to you - you are such a blessing and comfort to my heart.

  7. Hi Mary,
lovely post, and lovely pics. I tried to avoid the one with the lovely pie in (I am not sure what it is) as I am trying not to put on too much weight :-) The weather here in Northern Ireland is variable at the moment as we are close to the Irish sea. The plants are thriving as we get rain, sun, and all different temperatures. As Cheryl does, I believe we are close to the Lord's return too, so whatever we have to share on our blogs, it is always lovely to interact with one another.

    1. The pie is apricot and the last of pie fillings I prepared from my apricot tree and froze last year. No apricots this year as my second tree died. Funny how I can have so much fruit one year, yet the next nothing. I like interacting with you, too, Brenda!

  8. And what a strange summer it has been. We started here in TN with Tornado's, then the next week we went straight into a shut down, straight line winds hit us next and then the riots. The virus being the worst of it as of yet here in Nashville. Our summer was not all that bad, we had some hot days that hit the three digit mark but not that many or maybe I just stayed in more. :) ....Fall being my fave time of the yr and our temps are starting to drop I am loving it. I know that you guys in that state getting some frying type temps. I could not handle it, I dislike the hot so much. Beautiful pics.

  9. I have been denying that fall is on the way for a couple weeks now but I am starting to embrace it. :) We have had choking smoke for the past week and half and I am ready for cooler temps and some rain to wash it all away. That being said I am still a little sad to see summer go. It went by so fast!

Thank you for sharing some of your lovely memories of summer!

    Love,
    Annie

A Memorial Day Reflection

Memorial Day is always noteworthy for me and my girls.  Next Thursday marks the third year of missing their father, my husband. So many thoughts  run through my mind.  The journey of loss takes on various emotions.  The strongest feeling, at first, was emptiness.  In a split second, I would forget he departed forever.  I imagined things I needed to talk to him about when he got back home.  My mind is realistic now.  He's not coming back.  There will be no more times of sitting on the porch swing together on the front deck staring at the moon and the stars.  He would tell me all he knew about the majestic night sky. I have so much I wish I could tell him, like the excitement of seeing our oldest grandchild make a decision to follow Jesus and get baptized on Mother's Day!  And our little Amy, 11 years old, I wish he could have seen her on stage receiving her induction to the National Honor Society. Our daughters have their own ...

Mama's Lipstick

I always wished I could do things with my mom like shop in the mall, share makeup secrets or go to the movies and watch romantic comedies.  My wish never materialized.     My mama behaved like a tomboy.   She loved baseball and pitched with a strong right arm.   She could care less about the latest fashion or the latest movies featured on the big screen.   She never polished her fingernails.    One day after elementary school, I walked into the house to find my mom all dolled up in front of the bathroom mirror, foundation crème, powder, eyebrow pencil and rouge all over the counter sink.  “Who are you?” I asked, thrilled to see my mama putting on the Ritz.  Makeup in place and blotted, she immediately took it off.  “I don’t like the way it feels,” she exclaimed. She retired in Arizona and protected her dry lips with a light rose lipstick, the color of natural lips, a step above ChapStick.  She wore it a few tim...

Book Review of Biblical Minimalism and Give Away

What does minimizing look like?  To the empty nester it may mean downsizing real estate.  To the co-dependent, it may mean pitching some toxic friendships they tend to collect.  I thought I had a handle on Biblical minimalism, but I wasn’t even close.  Biblical minimalism is much more than cleaning out a drawer and discarding unwanted things into a box to take to the thrift store. In her book, Biblical Minimalism, Cheryl E. Smith defines Biblical minimalism as “a complete, whole person release of anything unlike Jesus, a letting go of everything that hinders us from following Him wholeheartedly and single- mindedly , and a relinquishing of all that brings us under bondage to this earthly, very temporary life.” The author gives us a visual of a whole pie that is divided into eight slices.  Each slice describes our lives with areas to analyze to see if pruning or adjustment is needed.  I won’t name them all, but one example is the “emotional ...
