What My Black Cat Taught Me

I signed in Bella’s name when we arrived at the Pet Clinic and I sat down.  The clinic’s next appointment arrived, a blonde woman also with a cat; she sat right next to me.

The friendly blonde asked me:  “Is that a black cat in your carrier?”  I answered that she is a female black cat and the last chosen from a litter of kittens that we adopted last year.

The blonde bent over her cat carrier and opened the door lifting out a beautiful black female cat.  Then she said:   “Black cats and dogs are least adopted so I only adopt black cats.”

“Really, I wondered why people bypass black cats and dogs.  I never heard that before,” I answered.

Just then, they called Bella’s name and we were led into the exam room.   I have no reason to doubt the blonde’s research.  Our conversation got me thinking, however, about favoritism and adoption.

Romans 9:8
This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.

Children of the promise, imagine that!  We become God’s children when we give our lives over to Him and we inherit the promise.   We are the children who believe His Word!   I love to think about all the promises in the Bible that are mine to have because I’ve been adopted in the family!

I do not believe in replacement theology.  The Jews are God’s chosen but some do not believe His promise, the Messiah.

For God shows no partiality.
Romans 2:11

There we have it!  No favoritism.  Unlike adoption at the pet clinic, Father God doesn’t care what color we are or what we look like.  He is Father to all of us.

Funny how I arrived at the pet clinic never expecting I would be thinking of adoption and favoritism.  My thoughts run deep as I consider all that God has done for me!

  1. The lady is right about black cats being the least likely to be adopted. Sadly, people believe in the superstition of them being bad luck, but for myself, I can tell you, having had 3 black cats in my life that they are just as sweet and bring just as much joy in my life as any other cat I have had. Lovely post, as always, thank you so much for sharing.

  2. What a wonderful thought! To know that God doesn't look on our outward appearance, but upon our hearts, and He has no favorites! He is a merciful and a fair God, and He is everything we need. We used to have a black cat...such a sweet, little companion to us! God bless you, sweet friend. :)

  3. God indeed looks at the heart, not our outward appearance. I always find it interesting how people want to portray what Jesus looked like, yet nowhere in the Bible is a physical description given of him.

I heard at shelters they won't let black cats be adopted around Halloween time. Probably wise I think.

  4. Isn't is amazing how we can learn so much from our beautiful animals? I find that very inspiring!

  5. With awful sensitivities to allergens, that's the reason we never had furry pets. Bella...meaning "beautiful" and she is! It's sad to hear that black ones don't get chosen because of their color. But I agree with the 1st commenter, many people believe in superstitious beliefs. I'm glad our heavenly Father always speaks of the truth! And that there is no bias in Him. Amazing how much we learn about Him in any events in our lives that are unexpected. How true! "For from him and through him and to him are all things."

Thank you sister for prayers for my son. I appreciate you always encouraging me in everything I do or my family does. Have an awesome Monday and rest of the week!!! Love and prayers.

  6. It's amazing what the Father has in store for us, even when we think it is just a routine visit. Have a great day.

  10. Great thoughts! It's amazing when we're thinking about God, how many situations can bring forth His Word in new and meaningful ways!

I'm glad that God doesn't show favoritism - I'm a little *black* myself!!

    GOD BLESS!

  12. I'm with you, Mary. The Bible is pretty clear that God's not prejudice, He sees the heart... Hair and eye color? Seems logically of no consequence. May we confess our sins so that He will heal our nation.

  13. I've never heard that about black cats either! Interesting. So glad that God doesn't pick and choose us like that. :) Hope Bella is doing well.

  14. However did I miss this post?
I'd never heard that about black cats being 'least likely.' Not in God's eyes!

PS - Bella's sure a cutie ... and blessed to be loved by y'all!

Because He Lives, I Can Move

I’m currently in one of those places where you lay out all the options and then you make the best decision. It seems, however, like none of the choices are fair or attractive. I know God will help me in my situation because I desire His guidance. I’m clinging to His Word which promises that ALL things work together for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. I heard a great teaching this week about seeking God’s will and all the freedom that surrender brings. We can know that God is bringing about a victory if we trust Him with each and every decision. The speaker illustrated his point with a famous painting. The painting depicts a look of despair on the chess player’s face. He’s playing Satan and his soul is at stake. It looks like Satan is winning. Checkmate! When Paul Morphy saw this painting back in the 1800’s, he set up a chess board and aligned the pieces to reflect the painting. Being a world champion, he studied the board. His conclusi

Humor for the Bride and Groom

A young couple decided to wed.  As the big day approached, they grew apprehensive.  Each had a problem they had never before shared with anyone, not even each other. The Groom-to-be, overcoming his fear, decided to ask his father for advice.   "Father," he said, "I am deeply concerned about the success of my marriage."  His father replied, "Don't you love this girl?"   "Oh yes, very much," he said," but you see, I have very smelly feet, and I'm afraid that my fiancé will be put off by them."  "No problem," said dad, "all you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed."   Well, to him this seemed a workable solution. The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to take her problem up with her mom."  Mom," she said, "When I wake up in the morning my breath is truly awful."  "Honey," her mother consoled, "everyone has

A Veteran's Story

I noticed Bill sitting in our local park where I walk.   He glanced my way just as I finished the last exercise walk song on my playlist.   He shouted and pointed to my car:   “Hey, is that your car with the Nam front license plate?   I stepped closer into the veranda where Bill sat on a picnic bench.   I noticed his Vietnam Vet cap and instantly I knew why I walked there that day.   The Marine Vet served during the 1960’s, the same time span as my husband.   Bill talked a lot about the war evoking my emotions from laughter to tears.   My South Vietnam front plate often prompts a conversation with a stranger and I’ve learned a deep respect for it over the years.   It is my way of listening to a veteran.   I enjoyed listening to Bill.   He made me laugh in spots but he made me cry as well.   Like when he talked about the sandwich lady.   “Do you ever eat at the sandwich shop in the gas station down the street?”   I replied that I’ve order coffee once in that place with a turke
