The Promised Land of Cabo

The world of sales reminds me of fishing.  Salesmen live on the adrenaline of reeling in a sale.  When they get enough of them, they earn a reward or a plaque or a trip or all three!

After check-in at the posh Phoenix resort, I attended the first event on my agenda.  The noisy hospitality room erupted with cheerful conversations.  I collected happy hugs from co-workers from the company’s numerous locations.  Off to the ballroom, we enjoyed an elegant dinner along with a presentation of sales awards.

The company thanked us for our talent and enthusiasm in selling their homes.  A new year of sales competition began and a reward would dangle in our midst like a lure at the end of a fishing line.

“Who wants to go to Cabo San Lucas?  The Vice President asked a room full of cheering, intoxicated men and women.

I slept well in the luxurious resort that night.  The hotel catered a breakfast buffet for our group the next morning.  Rested and full, we left for the conference room eager for the unveiling of our company’s newest changes.

My boss grabbed my arm and asked me to walk with him.  We got to the halfway point when his cell phone rang.  He held up one finger, sign language for me to wait.  I browsed in the gift shop to give the man privacy amusing myself with floppy beach hats.  Then I saw it.  Oh, my, I must take that maxi sun dress off the display rack and at least hold it up in front of the mirror.

I could not hide my pleasure of its perfect color and style.

The boss beckoned me and I quickly returned the gorgeous showpiece to the rack.  At his side again, he commanded:  “Go back in there and buy that dress.  I’ll pay for it.”

“I don’t like it that much,” I lied, adding the way hotel gift shops mark up their dresses over 300%.

Oh, I could have let him buy me the dress but I reasoned that he would weave the expense into extra charges on commission sheets somehow chipping away at my paychecks.

But what if he thought the dress looked good too?   I will never know now will I?

Window shopping only teases what I wish could materialize.

Do you ever wonder if Moses felt like he window shopped with God?   In Deuteronomy, Chapter 32, Father God takes Moses to the scenic point.  “Look at the lush promised land, my reward for my people,” Father speaks.  “But not for you, Moses.”

Over and over again in the Old Testament the message repeats:

Obey God and you inherit a blessing.  Disobey, and you get zip.

The concept works everywhere especially in the marketplace.  I worked hard that year and learned the Promised Land, Cabo San Lucas, hints of paradise!

I should have let him buy me that gorgeous sundress!

The Resort

I love this with the family on the beach in the background!

Living life on the ledge!  Don't back up.

Look who I picked up in the Copacabana!

  1. I'm constantly amazed at God's grace and mercy. Moses messed up in a major way and disqualified himself from crossing the Jordan with the people. But God, in His bountiful mercy, took Moses to the pinnacle of the mountain and showed him the place where Moses was leading the tribes of Israel. And then, God took Moses up to a better place--an eternal rest. Thank you for sharing, Mary. Cabo isn't heaven--but it must be next door.

    1. Hi, Cho!
I can just picture Father God smiling down on us in our wonderment of our eternal reward and thinking "they have no clue what I have in store for them!" Thanks for reading my story.

I'm thinking you were smart to listen to your instincts and refuse his offer of the sun dress. "Something for nothing" never bodes well. (... Then again, I may be being overly suspicious.)

So happy you were able to experience Cabo! :)

    1. Hi, Myra!
Not sure if it's overly suspicious, or maybe just the proper thing to do. You and I may not be a lot of things, but let's face it girl...we are proper. (most of the time.)

  5. That was great you won the trip and the hard work you had to put into it to get it! I don't think I would have allowed him to have put the sundress either for me. Some boundaries are good to leave up, I think. It does amaze me when I read the story of Moses how he was so faithful in so much but yet disobedient in a little and not allowed to go into the Promised Land; but I do trust God's reasoning why not

  6. I love the way you connected your experience with another faith-filled lessons here. We never learn, don't we? We know how richly blessed we are with God yet, sometimes, men still fail to fully trust Him when He leads. I enjoyed all the photos you shared!
With the hard work you did, you did deserve that reward! I felt it was your honest and dedicated work that made your boss give that offer for him to buy you that dress! I don't believe in giving bosses special gifts at work, but I think it is always a nice gesture if it's them rewarding those employees who have good work habits. I knew if there was a bad intention with that offer, there was that guy in Copacabana who would always protect you ;) Blessings.

    1. Again, I see your amazing insight. Whether in the world or the church, we learn from our leaders. The boss is a southern gent full of charm and generosity. I learned so much from him. Maybe that’s why I traveled light so I could fill my suitcase with gifts for my co-workers who protected my interests in my office. Thank you for stopping by and speaking a blessing over me today!

I have missed you much and your humorous words!!!! I hope you are smiling.
Thank you for putting smiles on our faces.
    God Bless friend.

  9. Love the pictures sweet lady. Oh I must say that I will have to totally agree that the correct answer was the NO one on the boss buying the dress. As my man would remind me often....NOTHING IS EVER TRULY FREE but our Salvation but even that came at a big price for our Lord. You are blessed my friend beyond measure. And you will look good in anything on your trip! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    1. Even on sale those gift shop dress prices are too extravagant for my budget, Cindy. Who shops in resort gift shops? They are there only for a gal who wants to kill time while the boss is on the phone.

  10. First those resort hotels gouge you on the price, and then they try to lure you into their over-priced gift shops! I try to resist...

And really, after all is said and done, the best things in life are free! Salvation cost Jesus everything, but He offers it to us as the best gift ever...for FREE! What a bargain - my sin for His righteousness!!

    GOD BLESS!

Because He Lives, I Can Move

I’m currently in one of those places where you lay out all the options and then you make the best decision. It seems, however, like none of the choices are fair or attractive. I know God will help me in my situation because I desire His guidance. I’m clinging to His Word which promises that ALL things work together for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. I heard a great teaching this week about seeking God’s will and all the freedom that surrender brings. We can know that God is bringing about a victory if we trust Him with each and every decision. The speaker illustrated his point with a famous painting. The painting depicts a look of despair on the chess player’s face. He’s playing Satan and his soul is at stake. It looks like Satan is winning. Checkmate! When Paul Morphy saw this painting back in the 1800’s, he set up a chess board and aligned the pieces to reflect the painting. Being a world champion, he studied the board. His conclusi

Humor for the Bride and Groom

A young couple decided to wed.  As the big day approached, they grew apprehensive.  Each had a problem they had never before shared with anyone, not even each other. The Groom-to-be, overcoming his fear, decided to ask his father for advice.   "Father," he said, "I am deeply concerned about the success of my marriage."  His father replied, "Don't you love this girl?"   "Oh yes, very much," he said," but you see, I have very smelly feet, and I'm afraid that my fiancé will be put off by them."  "No problem," said dad, "all you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed."   Well, to him this seemed a workable solution. The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to take her problem up with her mom."  Mom," she said, "When I wake up in the morning my breath is truly awful."  "Honey," her mother consoled, "everyone has

A Veteran's Story

I noticed Bill sitting in our local park where I walk.   He glanced my way just as I finished the last exercise walk song on my playlist.   He shouted and pointed to my car:   “Hey, is that your car with the Nam front license plate?   I stepped closer into the veranda where Bill sat on a picnic bench.   I noticed his Vietnam Vet cap and instantly I knew why I walked there that day.   The Marine Vet served during the 1960’s, the same time span as my husband.   Bill talked a lot about the war evoking my emotions from laughter to tears.   My South Vietnam front plate often prompts a conversation with a stranger and I’ve learned a deep respect for it over the years.   It is my way of listening to a veteran.   I enjoyed listening to Bill.   He made me laugh in spots but he made me cry as well.   Like when he talked about the sandwich lady.   “Do you ever eat at the sandwich shop in the gas station down the street?”   I replied that I’ve order coffee once in that place with a turke
