A Divine Fix

Sometimes I feel like I’m married to MacGyver; like when the ceiling fan broke and fell on me and he assured me he can fix it with a roll of duct tape.

Dust piled high on the ceiling fan in the guest room; I climbed on my ladder.   I swiped the first blade and the whole unit fell on me!  I cried “Help!”  MacGyver came running and grabbed the heavy fan.  I dug in my pocket and pulled out my petite, hot pink sequined flashlight.  He inspected the damage.  “It’s a broken bracket, but don’t worry.  I can fix this.”

I don’t want him to fix it.  I want a new fan installed immediately. The family likes this room when they visit.   The fan is right over the bed – the place where six-year old Sookie sleeps.  The bed—my makeshift change station—it’s where I change the baby’s diapers.

This mama bear is insistent.

“Do you trust me?”  He asks.  I shook my head negatively, bangs flying from the east to the west.  “I want a new one.”

I was the first one to spot a set of car keys and drove him to Home Depot.  For ten minutes I prayed in the car while he shopped for a new bracket.  The car’s side door opened and I glanced at the box containing a brand new fan.  Home Depot no longer manufactures the bracket or our old unit!

You should see my pretty new fan lighting up the guest room.

We rejoiced that God cares about the details such as our little family or broken ceiling fans.  We offered praise and thanksgiving on the drive home.

I speak powerful scripture declarations at the start of each new day that my friend, Debbie, taught me.  These are my favorites:

I have a covenant with God and by the blood of Jesus I release my divine protection and divine provision.  (Hebrews 8:6)

My angels are carrying out the Word of God on my behalf (Psalm 103:20)

Any adversity, attack, accidents and tragedies that were headed my way are diverted right now in Jesus’ Name.  (Psalm 91)

I watched our grandchildren play in the guest room and as I stood in the doorway, I remembered that an umbrella of divine protection hovers over them.

For the record, I am grateful to have a man who can fix things and I don’t take that for granted.  Have you ever heard of a ceiling fan falling down from the ceiling?

  1. Oh, my! I have never heard of a ceiling fan falling from the ceiling! I am renting an apartment in a basement of a house, people whom I know, and the lady homeowner's husband can do just about anything from fixing his own car to plumbing to electricity. He is very handy and it is so rare that they need to call in someone to take care of things in the house. :)

  7. God wanted you to have a new ceiling fan that is for sure. I am thankful you were not hurt when the fan fell on you and that your hubby was close by to rescue you. I could envision you shaking your head NO and your bangs flying this way and that. Thanks for sharing with us here at Tell me a Story.

  8. Hi Mary! First of all, I LOVE your header with the blog name on it. Is it new? (Maybe I just haven't noticed...)

I would have reacted exactly as you did. Oh Lord, could you imagine having something happen with guests in there? Especially children? I am so happy that the bracket is no longer used, and that God heard your prayer for safety. He loves all His children, especially the little ones! I hope you enjoy this lovely fan for years to come.

And no. I've never heard of a fan falling! Thank goodness you weren't hurt!
    In thanksgiving,

  9. OK, I just have to know - did you gloat (just a little bit) when your hubby came out with a new fan??? If not, you're a better woman than I would have been! HA!

I don't know that I've heard of a falling ceiling fan, but there have been plenty of *fixes* that I have witnessed. My hubby is a handy guy, too. Fortunately, he usually knows when something is beyond his ability, and it's time to call an expert.

Wish I could learn that in my own life. Learning that life is beyond my ability to fix, and I need to call in The Expert (Jesus!)

    GOD BLESS!

    1. Hi, Sharon!
I was glad God got a hold of Him while I waited in the car. I kept telling him how wise he was to purchase a new unit. The poor man looked so humble, this good wife didn't want to botch things up!!! Remember, he still had to install it before they arrived!

What a great take on this story! Love your comment.

  11. I like your husband's style! But I know that determined look on a wife's face that means the options are coming to an end...

Being thankful for the little things in life brings a peace and joy that big ticket items can't fulfill for more than a season.

Those pictures of your grandkids are awesome! What a blessing...

  12. Hello my friend, I am so glad that you weren't seriously hurt when the fan fell on you. Oh my goodness! But I can see you whipping out your pink flashlight and shaking your head no!

I'm grateful that the Lord saw to it that you needed a new fan. You are a good wife to praise your husband for his decision to get a new fan, even if it was due to the fact that they no longer make that bracket.

    Love you!

  13. I don't doubt that that could happen! I live with a man who can fix anything and like you, sometimes I must demand we don't fix it but get something new! On mother's day he installed a new battery in my car even when the old was recharged because he saw that panic on my face. :)

Because He Lives, I Can Move

I’m currently in one of those places where you lay out all the options and then you make the best decision. It seems, however, like none of the choices are fair or attractive. I know God will help me in my situation because I desire His guidance. I’m clinging to His Word which promises that ALL things work together for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. I heard a great teaching this week about seeking God’s will and all the freedom that surrender brings. We can know that God is bringing about a victory if we trust Him with each and every decision. The speaker illustrated his point with a famous painting. The painting depicts a look of despair on the chess player’s face. He’s playing Satan and his soul is at stake. It looks like Satan is winning. Checkmate! When Paul Morphy saw this painting back in the 1800’s, he set up a chess board and aligned the pieces to reflect the painting. Being a world champion, he studied the board. His conclusi

Humor for the Bride and Groom

A young couple decided to wed.  As the big day approached, they grew apprehensive.  Each had a problem they had never before shared with anyone, not even each other. The Groom-to-be, overcoming his fear, decided to ask his father for advice.   "Father," he said, "I am deeply concerned about the success of my marriage."  His father replied, "Don't you love this girl?"   "Oh yes, very much," he said," but you see, I have very smelly feet, and I'm afraid that my fiancé will be put off by them."  "No problem," said dad, "all you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed."   Well, to him this seemed a workable solution. The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to take her problem up with her mom."  Mom," she said, "When I wake up in the morning my breath is truly awful."  "Honey," her mother consoled, "everyone has

A Veteran's Story

I noticed Bill sitting in our local park where I walk.   He glanced my way just as I finished the last exercise walk song on my playlist.   He shouted and pointed to my car:   “Hey, is that your car with the Nam front license plate?   I stepped closer into the veranda where Bill sat on a picnic bench.   I noticed his Vietnam Vet cap and instantly I knew why I walked there that day.   The Marine Vet served during the 1960’s, the same time span as my husband.   Bill talked a lot about the war evoking my emotions from laughter to tears.   My South Vietnam front plate often prompts a conversation with a stranger and I’ve learned a deep respect for it over the years.   It is my way of listening to a veteran.   I enjoyed listening to Bill.   He made me laugh in spots but he made me cry as well.   Like when he talked about the sandwich lady.   “Do you ever eat at the sandwich shop in the gas station down the street?”   I replied that I’ve order coffee once in that place with a turke
