An Entry in my Ruby Red Journal

Outside my window…a haze of thick smoke hangs over my town and pinches my eyes.  Over 20,000 acres of our beloved Sedona canyon has burned.

I remember…hiking in West fork (Sedona) with my family.  I am so sad that so much beauty has burned away.

I am hoping…the contractor can complete repairs at my daughter’s home today.

I was surprised when…an author friend challenged me to privately journal about this statement:  “Ask God to show you how He sees you.”  This is not as easy as it looks.

I am stressful…about the results of my eye exam last week.  It’s time for bi-focals and this may take some getting use to!

I am thankful…I was able to spend time with my family over Memorial Day weekend.   Notice this Agave plant.  The flowers shot up at least 20 feet.  The sap from some species of this succulent are used to make Tequila.  Photo was taken at my daughter and son-in-law's home.   The plant has not bloomed for 17 years!

I am reading…Callie’s Mountain by Veda Boyd Jones

A favorite quote this week…
When a person shows you themselves the first time, believe them.”  Maya Angelou

I close with a Bible verse:

Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

1 Corinthians 13: 4-8

  1. Mary,
I have a lot of filled journals. It is always a blessing to look back and see how God was faithful through everything.
    Love the bling on yours!
That's some agave tree....never seen one before. Great picture.

  2. A lovely journal entry, except for the fire! That makes me so sad. We have visited Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon several times, and it saddens me also to think of the destruction...

"Ask God to show you how He sees you." I would love to see the love in His eyes. Of course, I don't have to look far...it's all through the Bible.

    GOD BLESS!

  3. Oh, were I only to have the courage to ask God to show me how He sees me! That's a neat poser, Mary.

Love seeing the pix of Susanna and wee Amy! So happy you were able to spend time loving on those sweet babes. (Is it just me, or is Amy the spittin' image of her daddy?)

  4. I always wish someone will come up with better ideas of fighting those kind of fires. It is truly sad when such beauty around is consumed in just minutes or hours.

I love your journal. Reminds me I haven't written in a while. It is good to see God's goodness among those entries...especially when facing life's storms.

Agave...How beautiful...I love it as sweetener?

    "Trusts God always,
    Always looks for the best,
    Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end. " - I love reading this...It encourages me. I pray all is well with your hubby sister Mary. I had bifocals long time ago. It's not so bad getting adjusted to it. I pray you will be the same. My problem was saying it...I accidentally say "bipolar" sometimes...But that's a way for me to make my co-workers laugh. So sometimes, they know me as the nurse with the "bipolar glasses"...Have a great week sister.

  5. I have never seen a agave tree.... odd fella isn't it. Sad to read in you journal about the fire...I would be scared to death. I need new glasses too. I have bifocals...if you get the blended ones it is much easier to adjust. I need a stronger prescription...I have tired eyes lately which is a sign of eye strain. Bummer.

  7. That's such a beautiful journal Mary. I've been a keeper of journals for years now. Some fancy and others not so much.

  8. Mary, I am so sorry to learn that there was damage to your daughter's home. I do hope that it is repairable without a great amount of expense.

Love the picture on the sidebar of you and your two precious granddaughters! They both are beautiful.

  10. Your journal entry says a lot with just a few lines per category! Isn't that amazing... Sorry to hear about the fire in Sedona. I know nature will do its job of restoring but it may take time.

Oh, Mary, I also scrolled down to read about your wonderful time at Los Algodones! You took time to write an excellent post and I was hooked to it until I reached the ending. Talk to me about dental issues! I know all about it... maybe I can share some of my recent stories with you one of these days. Have a blessed Pentecost today, dear friend.
    Love

Spiritual Sundays ~ Flamboyant Love

I was shopping for a birthday card during my lunch hour last week when I overheard an elderly woman in the card aisle talking to her niece, a woman about my age. Here is what she said: “ I threw out all my cards. They never meant those words anyway .” Lots of laughter followed. How sad I thought to be unable to receive the love sent to her in the sentiments of a card. This incident got me thinking about the love of God and resolving to embrace it when it is offered to me. It doesn’t matter if I think I’m worthy of such extravagant love; He thinks so! In contrast, just a day later I received one of those gorgeous hand-crafted cards in the mail from my friend, Kay, who loves paper crafting. It was so pretty and love and joy just oozed out of it when I opened it. This is a sample of her designs at Creativity is Good. Kay wrote a beautiful note to me in the card reminding me of God’s tender love for me. She ended her thoughts with “The God of the universe loves us more than we can ever f...

Holiday Movie Comes to Life

It’s uncanny when a new holiday movie comes out and resembles your personal life.   I came clean to my husband on that drive to the Harkins in Sedona confessing that the movie got bad ratings.   It isn’t the type of movie that he would choose to see in the first place.   Rotten Tomatoes gave it one star.   My prince charming replied:   “ Let’s see what we think of it and rate it ourselves.”   Yes!   High five to his palm! It started out as a fun afternoon date.   It would have been perfect if the lady directly in front of me didn’t have on super-strength perfume.   Smells can be troublesome when you’re prone to headaches.   I stuck my head in a big bucket of buttered popcorn; you know-- to alleviate her fragrance, because popcorn smell is less offensive.   What else is a girl like me to do? We named the genre “drama with comedy.”   Cast of characters acted like the typical family scene at Christmas tim...

Abba's Lap

I noticed a behavior pattern in little Amy, twenty months old, that I want to imitate.  She moves fast engaging in one toddler activity after another spinning like a whirlwind from one room to another.  Yet, she pauses,  intermittently , long enough to get refreshed.   I want to be like this grandchild of mine because she knows where to go and how to get comforted. Amy moves at record speed, putting more miles on a pedometer in one hour than my accumulated weekly workouts at the gym.  She can build a skyscraper so tall, I wonder why those bright pink Lego’s don’t topple to the ground as she continues to stack just one more piece on top. I learned never to leave the room to get another cup of coffee.  Once, when I returned, I found her climbing past the couch with hands and feet reaching for the living room drapes. She has a consistent habit that I admire.  In the midst of her activities, as she moves robustly from one play...
