A haughty spirit can really trip you up! At times, I'm sure I am thinking correctly only to find out that it is not so.
An example is yesterday. Have you ever played traveling Scrabble? You can change only one letter to make a new word. The rule is you can’t make up a word. Then you send it to ten others along with the one you received it from. My sister-in-law, Tammie, challenges me in this game. I thought I had her last night when I received her email back. She typed in a word I never heard of before. I was just about to call her on it. Sure enough, just like last time, it was a legitimate word. I laughed so hard. What a smarty.
I wasn’t laughing last month when my husband corrected me in a matter that I had a strong opinion about. I was wrong, though. Looking back, I’m grateful for that correction. In the end, he saved me from embarrassment.
God hates pride, too:

16There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
Prov. 6:16 -19

Whoa ... haven't we all been there before!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet, your hubby loves you enough, he doesn't want your mind being poisened by Untruth. (Does this make any sense?)
Great analogy, Mary!
Great post! I've learned that lesson many times myself. If only I could have learned it as a teenager. :-)
ReplyDeleteJane
oh yes, me too...'too soon old, too late schmart!'...more times than I want to admit!! :)
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteSometimes pride is so hard to see in ourselves yet so easy to see in others. May God always give us His eyes so we can see what we need to be pruned so we can bear fruit.
Love and Hugs ~ Kat
Always enjoy coming to visit you, Mary. Thanks for a great post.

Ouch! This really hits MY nail on the head.:)
ReplyDeleteDear Mary,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your greeting at my recent post, and thank you for following too!
Humility is a lesson I learned the hard way, and I am grateful the Father loved me enough to save me from the blindness and self delusion of pride. Nevertheless pride comes so easily, and so subtly, doesn't it? So time and again, God has to teach some more.
I look forward to reading more of your heart!
Shalom,
Lidj
Great to be reminded of how that kind of pride is not going to do us any good! It becomes a hindrance when we seek God, Who hates this kind of pride.
ReplyDeleteAll the glory be to the Lord! That sounds like a fun game...God bless sister.
ouch!!!! good post...sometimes I also fight to the end thinking I'm in the right and wham....I got it so wrong.
ReplyDelete:) What can I add? I totally agree with the above comments. Happy Spiritual Sunday.

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I go back and forth about small things. He often tells me I'm wrong, I will fight him on it every time.Thank-you for such a great post and a perfect reminder.

There are no such things as little white lies and I am so guilty of using them that I find myself almost afraid to speak. I have found when I think before I speak I find the right ways to say something without having to resort to niceties. Lovely post.
ReplyDeleteGreat post and very thought provoking...
ReplyDeleteKnow the feeling, know it well. I try to make myself thank the person for clearing the matter, but I do not always. I can feel the redness rising in my face, not from anger, just embarassment, and why? If I make nothing of it the matter is not a big thing, and I learn something.
ReplyDeleteCorrection is hard sometimes. Thanks for sharing those verses. Blessings ~
