Spiritual Sundays ~ Flamboyant Love

I was shopping for a birthday card during my lunch hour last week when I overheard an elderly woman in the card aisle talking to her niece, a woman about my age. Here is what she said: “I threw out all my cards. They never meant those words anyway.” Lots of laughter followed. How sad I thought to be unable to receive the love sent to her in the sentiments of a card. This incident got me thinking about the love of God and resolving to embrace it when it is offered to me. It doesn’t matter if I think I’m worthy of such extravagant love; He thinks so!

In contrast, just a day later I received one of those gorgeous hand-crafted cards in the mail from my friend, Kay, who loves paper crafting. It was so pretty and love and joy just oozed out of it when I opened it. This is a sample of her designs at Creativity is Good.

Kay wrote a beautiful note to me in the card reminding me of God’s tender love for me. She ended her thoughts with “The God of the universe loves us more than we can ever fully understand.” I don’t think it was any coincidence that Kay’s card arrived when it did. I’m meditating on God’s flamboyant love! Look at how The Message speaks of Ephesians 3:17-19:

And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, 18 you'll be able to take in with all Christians the extravagant dimensions of Christ's love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! 19 Live full lives, full in the fullness of God

God loves us!

  9. Your friend Kay certainly makes beautiful cards. I think it is sad when people are skeptical about the sentiments expressed in cards. When I get a card expressing love, I always think the person who sent it meant it. I end up throwing them away eventually but only because I can't keep all of them forever.
    Thanks for sharing.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

  11. Isn't that the way blessings often arrive, in the little things? I relish a card, or a brief email, or even a blog comment that contains words of affection. I think that's why I so enjoy God's word. It's chocked full of them!

    Bless you, dear Mary.

  16. Hi Mary Sweetie...
I haven't seen you in quite some time. I joined SS last week and was so blessed I couldn't wait to come back this week. I am thrilled to see you. I met you quite some time back at Michelle's going away Arizonan luncheon. You touched my heart that day, and I thank you for that.

Oh what a beautiful share on Love. I agree with Loren it was no coincident. It was GOD. He spoke to you through your sweet friend Kay. How GREAT is he?

Please stop by and say hi sweetie. It has been to long. Have a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. Many hugs, Sherry

  18. I think it is so sweet when people save cards. There are so many to choose from which tells me people still send them and MEAN it. Real letters and cards are such gifts.

Baby Died

Leave it to Baby to exit this world on an exciting Eclipse Day.   Talk about a grand departure!   I remember well the day I drove to the pet store.   It was 40 years ago and our youngest enrolled in kindergarten.   The house seemed too quiet all of a sudden.   I needed a friend.   I remember praying before I shopped for a bird.   Not a fragile parakeet this time, but I asked for a strong bird whose sounds would fill up our empty rooms.   I chose a young cockatiel and the family named him Baby.   Baby was a little too loud, but funny to have around especially when Tom came home from his job with the phone company.   He wore a pager back then and got in the habit of turning it off, back on and off again before setting it down by his wallet and keys.   Baby echoed the pager call perfectly and made us laugh every time.   I figured Baby, such a perky bird, would last a long time, but never expected him to hit the typical 15-20 year mark let alone 40!   I should have kept his papers.

The Lesson of the Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich

Years ago when I pretended to be Pioneer Woman of my small town’s newspaper, I caught wind of a story that circulated at the elementary school. Second Grade Students wrote about “How to Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich.”  I giggled at the teacher’s assignment but after reading some of the papers, I asked her if I could visit her class and talk to her students in order to feature them in my next column. This is what I learned! I learned generosity from a kid, Chad, who wrote:  “ I put the peanut butter & jelly on each piece of the bread, and then I add more peanut butter & jelly and put it together.” I learned organizational skills from a girl, Sunshine, who named each ingredient and wrote about shutting the refrigerator door when you take out the jelly and putting the peanut butter back after you make the sandwich. I learned that specific details assure success from a black & white thinker named Jason who wrote:  “ Only use Skippy P

Abba's Lap

I noticed a behavior pattern in little Amy, twenty months old, that I want to imitate.  She moves fast engaging in one toddler activity after another spinning like a whirlwind from one room to another.  Yet, she pauses,  intermittently , long enough to get refreshed.   I want to be like this grandchild of mine because she knows where to go and how to get comforted. Amy moves at record speed, putting more miles on a pedometer in one hour than my accumulated weekly workouts at the gym.  She can build a skyscraper so tall, I wonder why those bright pink Lego’s don’t topple to the ground as she continues to stack just one more piece on top. I learned never to leave the room to get another cup of coffee.  Once, when I returned, I found her climbing past the couch with hands and feet reaching for the living room drapes. She has a consistent habit that I admire.  In the midst of her activities, as she moves robustly from one play area to another, she pauses in front of her
