Spiritual Sunday ~ The Lesson Of The Camel

My girlfriend Jeeni’s love language is gifts. So as a result, when she wants to express her appreciation for me and our friendship, I can receive anything from a hand-made necklace to a free ticket to an event. That’s just the way we are, isn't it? We tend to express our love in ways we like to receive it. Recently Jeeni stopped by the office, but it was a day that I wasn’t working. One of the shelves in my bookcase displayed a little figurine of a camel. “How cute is that” I thought to myself the next day, realizing immediately that I missed a visit from Jeeni.

I’ve been gazing at that camel, thinking a lot about the lesson of the camel. Have you heard about it? To explain it to you, I have to get a little help from my favorite Woman of Faith go-to girl, Sheila Walsh. She included The Lesson of the Camel in her book, The Heartache That No One Sees. She wrote about a friend she met in a coffee shop who felt a God-nudge to share a Bible verse with her. “Commit your works to the Lord and your thoughts will be established.” Proverbs 16:31.

Sheila writes: “I had such a sense that this was indeed a special word from God to my heart that I began a word study of the verse. The word “commit” in the context of this verse is very interesting. The Hebrew word is “galal.” It means, “To roll; roll away.”

"The word 'galal' is used often to describe the way a camel gets rid of its burden. It is a two-step process. Frist, it kneels down, and then it rolls to the left and the load falls off the camel's back. The picture for us is a beautiful one. We are invited to kneel before God but encouraged not to stop there. We are called to roll over and let the burden fall off our backs. We are called to roll every burden, every concern for the future, onto the Lord, sure that he will accept that responsibility and will bless us.

Whatever you are facing right now, kneel before God and roll into His grace! He wants to carry your burden. You don't have to carry it anymore," Sheila writes.

I share with you today, my camel figurine, my book by Shelia Walsh and God’s Word urging us to roll every concern onto Him. He loves you and me. Our bodies have not been designed to carry burdens. Jesus wants them. I gladly give Him mine; how about you?

Spiritual Sundays is presented weekly by Charlotte and Ginger and they feature wonderful inspirational writers.

  8. Great post. Interesting facts about camels. Getting on and off them is interesting too. We rode camels to the pyramids in Egypt in 1978. The people there were surprised that we don't have camels in our deserts.
    Thank you for sharing.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

  9. Mary,

What a powerful story! I love it and know how the Lord desires for us to do this....I have trouble laying things down sometimes and when I do I realize how heavy things are and HIS Grace and MERCY just overwhelms me! I hope I can be more like a camel from now on ;)

    Love you Mary

  23. WOW, did I ever tell you that I heard Sheila Walsh at the WOF in August, and she is my go-to girl too?! I LOVE her book "Let Go". This is a wonderful lesson - thank you!

I'm coming to you live -- gallbladder-less! God alone got it done. My hat is off to Him. I am on my knees. God alone!

Thank you and your precious family for praying me through! I did a blog post about the details. I'm sitting here today sipping Diet Coke and watching my tummy turn black/blue, but I don't have to go out in the snow storm. Good trade off, yes? How was the fast at church?

The Last Supper Movie

It was on I-17, halfway to Camp Verde, when I discovered my turn signal had no sound.  Oh, my signals were working right, but when I reached up to my left ear I realized my hearing aids got left behind.  I took them out right before the final hairspray but forgot to put them back in again.  Hearing sounded muffled.  I chalked it up to old age and prayed for grace to be able to hear supernaturally as I drove to meet up with friends.  They were forgiving and sensitive and helped me forge through our afternoon plans.  We drove over the mountain towards Prescott to meet up with others from our home church and indulged in lunch at Chili's for good food and fun fellowship.  Afterwards, we walked across the street to purchase tickets for the afternoon viewing of The Last Supper.   There are two Last Supper movies playing at this writing.  We saw the movie Chris Tomlin co-produced.  The emphasis was on the day Jesus shared a Passover Sede...

Memories of Mom

I guess I'm like any daughter who, while enjoying an old photo album, finds that one sexy pose of her mom and shouts:  "Way to go, Mamma! I found this photo and I loved it!  I wondered:  "What was on her mind during this pose?"  "Was she thinking of my dad?"  Or was she competing with girlfriends who strived to pose the most like a movie star--Ginger Rogers or Bette Davis?  I will never know.    It feels strange to see it.  It seems out of character for her.  My mom was anything but a super model; she was more in the "tomboy" category! She had high morals.  I remember as a preschooler, bundled in a heavy winter coat, scarf, mittens, knit hat with a long braid on top, holding her hand as we walked in the snow to Gray's, the corner drug store.  Mom found a Playboy magazine on the shelf.  She pulled out her church badge and marched to the cash register and then asked to speak to Mrs. Gray.  The elderly woman listened to ...

Abba's Lap

I noticed a behavior pattern in little Amy, twenty months old, that I want to imitate.  She moves fast engaging in one toddler activity after another spinning like a whirlwind from one room to another.  Yet, she pauses,  intermittently , long enough to get refreshed.   I want to be like this grandchild of mine because she knows where to go and how to get comforted. Amy moves at record speed, putting more miles on a pedometer in one hour than my accumulated weekly workouts at the gym.  She can build a skyscraper so tall, I wonder why those bright pink Lego’s don’t topple to the ground as she continues to stack just one more piece on top. I learned never to leave the room to get another cup of coffee.  Once, when I returned, I found her climbing past the couch with hands and feet reaching for the living room drapes. She has a consistent habit that I admire.  In the midst of her activities, as she moves robustly from one play...
