Thankful Thursday ~ Military/Veterans

Let Christ’s peace rule in your hearts…and be thankful.
My husband served two tours in Viet Nam. Today, a few members of our family, and also a co-worker, called him to thank him for his service. He was grateful for their sentiments. What a different attitude today than back in the 60’s when people harassed him for his service to our great country. My thoughts of thankfulness intensified as I pondered our military theme for Thankful Thursday. I, too, want to express my thanks to all who served our country and fought for our freedoms.

I’m thankful for my savior, Jesus Christ. His passionate love for mankind and obedience to die on the cross so I can be free is something I never want to take for granted. Talk about freedom!

I’m thankful that Jesus heals today. My daughter has been battling a cold for over a week. I’m thankful that she was able to get into her doctor’s office yesterday and I’m thankful that a compassionate neighbor down the street was able to watch Susanna for her. My daughter started feeling much better today and then I got a call that she can’t keep anything down. She is terribly weak. I don’t know if she is having a reaction to the antibiotics the doctor gave her or if she now caught the flu. I’m praying for her and thanking God for a flight that I was able to book for Friday morning. I got the last available seat. I’m trusting God for strength and healing for her and protection for the baby. San Diego, here I come again!

May you have a peaceful, thankful Thursday today. For more thankful posts, go to Grace Alone.

  1. I agree with you that Thank God times have changed since the 60's. That was just so wrong. I will pray that your daughter recovers quickly and that the baby stays well. There is just so much going around this year.

  4. It is so unfortunate how the soldiers from the Vietnam War were treated when they returned home. It's hard enough to go and serve much less not be treated as the heroes they were.

Praying for your daughter and Susanna. You are getting so good at driving to San Diego now. I hope you have lots of tapes and music to listen to along the way. And it's a good time to pray

    Love you,

  5. Thank you to your hubby. My hubby was in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. I remember the heroes' welcome USA gave when they came back, only to die down after a few months. I pray that all of us don't take their sacrifices lightly because they risk their own lives to preserve the freedom we enjoy. Right on the Lord, giving His own life for the same reason. AMEN!!!
I call that divine intervention, that a neighbor willingly helped out your daughter by watching your cute gbaby. And you, being able to get that last seat. Praying here for the Lord to give healing to your daughter, thanking Him that you are able to go there and see both of them, and for Him to be with you as your travel. Take good care of yourself sister. Love you in Christ.

  8. No one in my family has fought in a war, so I've always felt removed from veterans. But, as I get older I have a tremendous respect and appreciation for those who have put their lives on the line to protect the values we hold dear. God bless your husband.

Praying your daughter recovers quickly. She's lucky to have a mom like you who'll come and care for her.

Because He Lives, I Can Move

I’m currently in one of those places where you lay out all the options and then you make the best decision. It seems, however, like none of the choices are fair or attractive. I know God will help me in my situation because I desire His guidance. I’m clinging to His Word which promises that ALL things work together for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. I heard a great teaching this week about seeking God’s will and all the freedom that surrender brings. We can know that God is bringing about a victory if we trust Him with each and every decision. The speaker illustrated his point with a famous painting. The painting depicts a look of despair on the chess player’s face. He’s playing Satan and his soul is at stake. It looks like Satan is winning. Checkmate! When Paul Morphy saw this painting back in the 1800’s, he set up a chess board and aligned the pieces to reflect the painting. Being a world champion, he studied the board. His conclusi

Humor for the Bride and Groom

A young couple decided to wed.  As the big day approached, they grew apprehensive.  Each had a problem they had never before shared with anyone, not even each other. The Groom-to-be, overcoming his fear, decided to ask his father for advice.   "Father," he said, "I am deeply concerned about the success of my marriage."  His father replied, "Don't you love this girl?"   "Oh yes, very much," he said," but you see, I have very smelly feet, and I'm afraid that my fiancé will be put off by them."  "No problem," said dad, "all you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed."   Well, to him this seemed a workable solution. The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to take her problem up with her mom."  Mom," she said, "When I wake up in the morning my breath is truly awful."  "Honey," her mother consoled, "everyone has

A Veteran's Story

I noticed Bill sitting in our local park where I walk.   He glanced my way just as I finished the last exercise walk song on my playlist.   He shouted and pointed to my car:   “Hey, is that your car with the Nam front license plate?   I stepped closer into the veranda where Bill sat on a picnic bench.   I noticed his Vietnam Vet cap and instantly I knew why I walked there that day.   The Marine Vet served during the 1960’s, the same time span as my husband.   Bill talked a lot about the war evoking my emotions from laughter to tears.   My South Vietnam front plate often prompts a conversation with a stranger and I’ve learned a deep respect for it over the years.   It is my way of listening to a veteran.   I enjoyed listening to Bill.   He made me laugh in spots but he made me cry as well.   Like when he talked about the sandwich lady.   “Do you ever eat at the sandwich shop in the gas station down the street?”   I replied that I’ve order coffee once in that place with a turke
