Name Your Song

Our pastor’s sermon last Sunday was taken from Psalm 133 which talks about unity.  Verse 1 says:  “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”  He made several good points about differences in the Body of Christ and how these differences become hurdles that we overcome in order to stand together in love for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I liked the creative way he showed those of us sitting in the 9:00 a.m. service just how different we all are.  He asked us to think of a song that describes our life.  People began shouting out titles to songs and some were hilarious, like Ann who sat behind me.  She yelled:  “I Will Survive!”  Remember that one by Gloria Gaynor?

Now that spring is here, I’m enjoying my prayer garden in the early hours of the morning.  It’s a wonderful setting to meet my Lord and praise Him along with the chirping birds, the blooming flowers and the rising son.  I feel His presence so close as I pray so the song that best describes my life is “Draw Me Close to You.”  It was written by Michael W. Smith and I often listen to Kathy Troccoli sing it on her Album, Draw Me Close To You.

Draw me close to you
Never let me go
I lay it all down again
To hear you say that I'm your friend
You are my desire
No one else will do
Cause nothing else can take your place
To feel the warmth of your embrace
Help me find the way
Bring me back to you

You're all I want
You're all I've ever needed
You're all I want
Help me know you are near

What about you?  What song best describes your life?

  1. I'm going to have to try and find that song on YouTube!

Your pastor sounds like such a charasmatic fella ... his question reminds me of those "What If?" books I adore.

"My" song? While I SHOULD stop to ponder, the first thing that popped in my head was "Both Sides Now" (wasn't that Carole King)?

    Big hugs,
    Myra

  2. I love the song you mentioned sister Mary. I also love the version sang by "The Katinas".

Unity is indeed important and how fun for your pastor to make everyone in your church understand how important that is if we truly belong to Christ.

Oh, it's hard to choose among my fav songs what describes my life. But lately,I'm hooked on "In My Own Little World" by Matthew West. I love it, too when he sang it with his guitar.

I still remember that video you posted where you recorded yourself doing your devotion in your comfy garden. I still remember your sweet voice praying for us who visited you. You're truly beautiful inside and out as His love truly shines within you. I guess...you're indeed always drawing closer and closer to the Lord! God bless and protect you sister! Thanks for your prayers and I also remember you in mine.

  3. I enjoy those new chorus too, and have been especially remembering the older hymns as I would try to sing them from memory to my mother just before she passed on to glory.
I would sing, What a friend we have in Jesus and she would smile. Thank you for sharing today, at Tell me a story. You are always welcome here.

  4. I love so many songs sweet sis, but the one I feel truly describes my life would be, Amazing Grace.

  5. I love the song you chose. I think mine would have to be "On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand".

  6. Hi Mary:

I'm catching up a little bit today and your blog reminded me of that song. I used to sing it all the time and have kind of forgotten about it. I love both the words and the tune.

I am a music lover, and it ministers so much to me. I don't have one theme song, but so many that are a blessing. Another old one I love was the Gaither's... 'something beautiful'. Remember that one?

Happy Sunday, I'm glad to be home and see what my friends are up to.

  7. Wow...what would be my song...?

I love Jim Brickman, The Gift,
but these days I really relate to Ian Britt, The Shape of Us. :)

  8. What a unique way to point out how we're all unique!

My song? That's a tough one. Probably my favorite one from *our* generation was "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or "You've Got A Friend." I always used to think of Jesus when I sang the lyrics to those songs.

As far as contemporary music, I really love "Revelation Song" - I belt out that chorus like a warrior:

    With all creation I sing,
Praise to the King of kings,
    You are my everything,
    And I will adore You.

    Yes, that sums it up.

    GOD BLESS!

  9. There are so many oldies I could drop in here. I love the pop sound, and still enjoy a rousing cleaning session with the Beach Boys, or Neil Sedaka.

But today, I'd say Building 429's newest says it all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOtsB4O1p3o

  10. Hey Mary! Love your prayer garden! There is nothing quite like greeting the day with Him!

I honestly have so many praise and worships songs that I play in my home and car that there are too many to list!

Hope you have a beautiful week!

    HE IS FAITHFUL!
    Hugs!

  11. Hi Mary -

    I enjoyed this piece, lady.

I'm not sure of the name of the song but the words in it are, "On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand."

  12. I love the idea of a prayer garden. I pray in the garden often but the thought of making a conscious decision to do this is very appealing to me. Thanks for the idea. I'm here from the Tell me a story hop.

Because He Lives, I Can Move

I’m currently in one of those places where you lay out all the options and then you make the best decision. It seems, however, like none of the choices are fair or attractive. I know God will help me in my situation because I desire His guidance. I’m clinging to His Word which promises that ALL things work together for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. I heard a great teaching this week about seeking God’s will and all the freedom that surrender brings. We can know that God is bringing about a victory if we trust Him with each and every decision. The speaker illustrated his point with a famous painting. The painting depicts a look of despair on the chess player’s face. He’s playing Satan and his soul is at stake. It looks like Satan is winning. Checkmate! When Paul Morphy saw this painting back in the 1800’s, he set up a chess board and aligned the pieces to reflect the painting. Being a world champion, he studied the board. His conclusi

Humor for the Bride and Groom

A young couple decided to wed.  As the big day approached, they grew apprehensive.  Each had a problem they had never before shared with anyone, not even each other. The Groom-to-be, overcoming his fear, decided to ask his father for advice.   "Father," he said, "I am deeply concerned about the success of my marriage."  His father replied, "Don't you love this girl?"   "Oh yes, very much," he said," but you see, I have very smelly feet, and I'm afraid that my fiancé will be put off by them."  "No problem," said dad, "all you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed."   Well, to him this seemed a workable solution. The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to take her problem up with her mom."  Mom," she said, "When I wake up in the morning my breath is truly awful."  "Honey," her mother consoled, "everyone has

A Veteran's Story

I noticed Bill sitting in our local park where I walk.   He glanced my way just as I finished the last exercise walk song on my playlist.   He shouted and pointed to my car:   “Hey, is that your car with the Nam front license plate?   I stepped closer into the veranda where Bill sat on a picnic bench.   I noticed his Vietnam Vet cap and instantly I knew why I walked there that day.   The Marine Vet served during the 1960’s, the same time span as my husband.   Bill talked a lot about the war evoking my emotions from laughter to tears.   My South Vietnam front plate often prompts a conversation with a stranger and I’ve learned a deep respect for it over the years.   It is my way of listening to a veteran.   I enjoyed listening to Bill.   He made me laugh in spots but he made me cry as well.   Like when he talked about the sandwich lady.   “Do you ever eat at the sandwich shop in the gas station down the street?”   I replied that I’ve order coffee once in that place with a turke
