The Best Route

No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening. It's painful!
But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest
of right living for those who are trained
in this way.

Hebrews 12:11

My husband got a new GPS and I like it much better than his old one. Now when we make the wrong turn, the classy English voice says: "alternate route" one time. This is so much easier to take than hearing "off course" repeatedly!

Discipline is one of those topics that feels like the "off course" reprimand. This is not God's intent. He is so much more loving than a human. I know He disciplines in love regardless of how it feels at the time. I don't always realize when I'm off course. Not only does He get me back on track, but His process trains me for holiness.

I'm remembering that when He disciplines one of His children, three things happen:
1. It's painful temporarily.
2. A blessing is promised from it.
3. In the end, it leads to a purpose!

Spiritual Sundays is a great place of inspiration and is hosted by Charlotte & Ginger. Go here.

  7. I love your analogy! I wish the Lord only had to tell me once. Sometimes I think he has to tell me twice. before I get it.

  10. We've never had a GPS. I think it would be really handy to have. I think it is important to remember that God disciplines His children. He does it because He loves us and I'm thankful for it. Thank you for this reminder.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

Discipline, "it leads to a purpose." I can think of nothing better than living a disciplined life with purpose. Thank you for sharing these inspirational words.

  14. Sometimes we don't realize that discipline, though painful, is an act of love. My husband got me a new one few days ago also to replace the other I was borrowing from him. But I never really use them a lot. Only when I go to those unfamiliar places. But how much more do we truly need His guidance not only in unfamiliar roads, but even on the ones we're on now? There's always that chance of driving off course when we start to not rely on His Voice. God bless you sister Mary and keeping you in prayers. Thank you for yours. Love you in Christ!

  15. Great thoughts. Our GPS say"recalculating" every time you turn off course. Sometimes I want to yell back" I am not, I just have to go to the bathroom" You would think someone could come up with a smarter one he he he. Blessings, Debbie

  16. Mmmm ... I'm thinking you've lived this out well over the years given the name of Carrie's blog: Pain to Purpose. Sounds like it was caught more than taught.

    Great thoughts, friend!

  18. It's funny how God leads we "bloggers" to write about the same topics sometimes. Just Sunday I posted something about getting "lost" -

I love the thoughts that you added to the ones I was thinking!

    GOD BLESS!

A Veteran's Story

I noticed Bill sitting in our local park where I walk.   He glanced my way just as I finished the last exercise walk song on my playlist.   He shouted and pointed to my car:   “Hey, is that your car with the Nam front license plate?   I stepped closer into the veranda where Bill sat on a picnic bench.   I noticed his Vietnam Vet cap and instantly I knew why I walked there that day.   The Marine Vet served during the 1960’s, the same time span as my husband.   Bill talked a lot about the war evoking my emotions from laughter to tears.   My South Vietnam front plate often prompts a conversation with a stranger and I’ve learned a deep respect for it over the years.   It is my way of listening to a veteran.   I enjoyed listening to Bill.   He made me laugh in spots but he made me cry as well.   Like when he talked about the sandwich lady.   “Do you ever eat at the sandwich shop in the gas station down the street...

A Memorial Day Reflection

Memorial Day is always noteworthy for me and my girls.  Next Thursday marks the third year of missing their father, my husband. So many thoughts  run through my mind.  The journey of loss takes on various emotions.  The strongest feeling, at first, was emptiness.  In a split second, I would forget he departed forever.  I imagined things I needed to talk to him about when he got back home.  My mind is realistic now.  He's not coming back.  There will be no more times of sitting on the porch swing together on the front deck staring at the moon and the stars.  He would tell me all he knew about the majestic night sky. I have so much I wish I could tell him, like the excitement of seeing our oldest grandchild make a decision to follow Jesus and get baptized on Mother's Day!  And our little Amy, 11 years old, I wish he could have seen her on stage receiving her induction to the National Honor Society. Our daughters have their own ...

Scary Scars

A young trouble-lovin’ neighbor boy managed to scare me back in my preschool days.  My mom sent me to our neighbor’s house where Freddie hid in the shrubs and jumped out at me wearing his Frankenstein mask loaded with scars.  I screamed every time.   I’ve had to forgive Freddie for harassing me when these memories pop up.  I’m sure he grew up to be a swell guy and if I could remember his last name I would look him up on social media and yell at him. Those Scars! The scars on the mask looked real to me, a six year old timid girl.  What is it about scars that creep us out like that? When I think of scars, I think of pain.  I don’t like to see people suffer.  Scars  are areas of fibrous tissue (fibrosis) that replace normal skin after injury. A  scar  results from the biological process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body. Thus,  scarring  is a natural part of the healing proce...
