My hands dripped with flour as I pressed shamrock-shaped cut outs into the sugar cookie dough on my kitchen island. A preacher shared his message on Christian TV in the other room and the subject did not interest me. He spoke about laughter. The mess of baking kept me stationary. Now I’m glad I stayed in that flour prison because I needed to hear what he had to say.
Several of his points alerted me to the tension most of us carry in our
ordinary days. For instance, the
anti-depressant medication taken in our nation supersedes other countries by
ninety percent. That’s a lot of up tightness.
Another
stat reminded me of the chronically sick who watch marathons of humorous movies
and get healed.
The
fact about laughter in marriage caught my attention big time. Speaking for most of us, the preacher man
stated: “Remember how we married couples
laughed together when we were dating?”
I
yelled over to my husband in the den and asked him if we laugh enough. He said he did but didn’t think I do.
I
thought about my week. I wish I lived
closer to my sister whose health is declining.
Both of my granddaughters have Whooping Cough and now their parents caught it. I like spring, but I get sinus
headaches from the pressure when everything starts to bloom.
True,
I’m not laughing much this week! How
about you? Do you think you laugh enough? Can I
get someone out there to laugh with me today?
Joke
I was walking down the
street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby looking homeless
woman who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner. I took out my wallet,
got out thirty dollars and asked "If I give you this money, will you go
shopping instead of buying food?"
"No, I don't waste time shopping,"
the homeless woman said. "I need to spend all my time trying to stay
alive."
"Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?" I asked.
"Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?" I asked.
"Are you nuts!"
replied the homeless woman. I haven't had my hair done in 20 years.
"Well, I am not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you out to dinner with my husband and me tonight."
"Well, I am not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you out to dinner with my husband and me tonight."
The homeless woman was shocked. "Won't
your husband be furious with you for doing that? I know that I'm dirty and I
probably smell pretty disgusting."
I said, "That's okay. It is important for him to see what a woman looks like after she has given up shopping, and hair appointments.

You made me laugh! And believe me, I need to more. Have been worrying whether or not the house will sell, and bills etc etc. No fun! Life is too short to not enjoy!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I just concluded a telcon w/ my BFF in Florida -- someone who's in chronic pain most of the time, who cares for her ailing (ungrateful) mother -- and still never fails to make ME laugh with her upbeat, funny outlook on life.
ReplyDeleteI sure agree about laughter being a healing force. I'm loving all these images, especially the one about International Women's Day!
LOL! You did make me laugh! Thank you so much for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI know I don't laugh enough, but I am learning to do more of it. I take myself way too seriously.
ReplyDeleteI'm certainly sorry to hear about your sister and your grandkids and parents with the Whooping Cough.
Thank you for all of the funnies...I'm smiling now, does that count? :)
I love to laugh and I think it really is the best medicine. I was with my family on Sat evening and we were talking about childhood memories. I laughed so hard I had tears running down my face. I loved your funnies too.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your sister, kids and grandkids!
Sorry to hear about the whooping cough going through your grands and their parents! Hope all feel fine soon. Its hard not to laugh being around my grandson. The other day I had to turn away from him when we were eating dinner and he was at his high chair and if he didn't care about a particular type of food, off it went to the floor. His preciseness in doing so had me in stitches but of course I couldn't show that to him :) It is always good to laugh and you know the adage; laughter is the best medcine!

I don't laugh much, but I'm aware of the belief that laughter is "the best medicine". It is said to trigger the release of endorphines which promote an overall sense of well-being.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to know that there is vaccination for whooping cough. Anyway, may your family feel better soon!
Praise God, He gave men the ability to develop vaccinations for whooping cough as well as other potentially deadly diseases. Please, please Google in the crippling effects and even death that a person with whooping cough can cause a baby to have.
ReplyDeleteI am blessed with a husband who loves to make people laugh--sometimes it is more of a groan with the puns he spouts, but I still appreciate his wonderful sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteOh, my! Thanks for the chuckles today, sweet friend! We have plenty of laughter going on around our house...me providing it oftentimes with my clumsiness! Oh, dear...I am always spilling things, stumbling, that sort of thing! LOL! Love and appreciate your so much, and I am praying for your dear sister. I am so sorry.
ReplyDeleteLaughter is the best medicine for anything that ails you. Thank you for the laugh.
ReplyDeleteOh I have indeed laughed this morning reading your post Mary. I try to laugh often. Laughter is good medicine for sure. I laugh at myself most often lately. I will say something out of the blue that my husband will say, "Cindy, that ain't made no sense" and I get plumb tickled at myself because I think, he is right...I make no sense! Anyway, enjoyed this so much my friend. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing just like a good belly laugh, I do agree. I hadn't heard of people being cured by laughing! Enjoyed your laughs for the day :)
ReplyDeleteHi Mary! Thanks for the laughter here today! My grandchildren just left and I was feeling a little blue...you made sure that your post was a healing moment for me. Thank you!

I love to laugh and do pretty often.
ReplyDeleteIt surprises me that you don't laugh often? Doesn't chuckling count?
Although I sneeze like a machine this time of year, I still love it. Each season is a gift.
Let me know next time you guys are in town, I'll make it my mission to make you laugh!
Haha. Effective. This post and those memes made me laugh.
