When the kids were little,
we use to travel 235 miles over the mountains to grandma’s house for
Thanksgiving every year. When we got back home, I never failed to get a call from
mom and dad telling me they were fighting the blues from missing the kids every
time they saw their little fingerprints on the window panes of their door!
Thanksgiving Day is almost
here. I won’t be able to share this wonderful
holiday with four year old Susanna this year as it is her Daddy’s turn, but I
have a memory that I treasure.
Last month when our family
came together at my place for Susanna’s birthday, something wonderful happened
as her and I colored together on the couch.
It was just after lunch one afternoon when her mommy wanted to go to
Sedona with her sis to show fiancé Paul the grandeur of the famous red
rocks. To my surprise, Susanna wanted to
stay home with me, her Groggy.
Sharing crayons and a
color book, I asked her if she ever sang while she colored. With that she began belting out a song of
thanksgiving that made my heart smile! “Give thanks with a grateful heart, give
thanks to the Holy One; give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.”
Shocked, I went to the computer and
found the song “Give Thanks” on Pandora.
We resumed our coloring together on the couch and I listened ever so intently
to her singing along with Don Moen: “And now let the weak say ‘I am strong’ let
the poor say ‘I am rich (big emphasis) because of what the Lord has done for
us.” It was powerful hearing my
granddaughter thank God like that!
This year I may not have
Susanna’s fingerprints all over my window panes, but she left her fingerprint
on my heart as I ponder our giving thanks to God together in song.
Happy Thanksgiving
everyone!

Wow. Just think of the power of the Lord within little Susanna's life already. No wonder we're to be like children!
ReplyDelete"Groggy?" ... that cracks me up!
stopping by to thank you for your prayer coverage. ((hugs)) What a delightful blessing it was to come home and see you had 'visited' today..
ReplyDeleteGrandchildren bring us joy in many ways. I love the truth spoken by little children--and the moment that you shared here. A delight that she sings about the Lord!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
What a wonderful story. You are blessed to have such a granddaughter, but then she probably is blessed to have such a wonderful "Groggy" as you.

ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful memory and out of the mouth of babes...I love this story Mary...thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad for this share, Mary! My heart needed to smile. I suspect Susanna's song may provoke lots of us to pause and remember that which counts.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a most blessed Thanksgiving!
Hugs,
Myra
This is a beautiful story. The Lord gave you a special thanksgiving gift.
ReplyDeleteFingerprints on the heart are the best! What a treasured memory you will always have of your time coloring and singing praises. Oh Mary, God is so good.
ReplyDeleteLove you,
Debbie
What a precious moment and a precious heart!
ReplyDeleteIn kind of an odd coincidence, my almost-13-year-old son began singing this song yesterday in the car. We were driving down the mountain to Boise. He stopped after a few lines to explain to his friend that his mom loves to sing this song. Indeed, I do. He rarely sings aloud and it gave me great satisfaction that this song had made an impression.

ReplyDeleteWhat a precious memory. Our granddaughters leave us so many wonderful memories. I hope that your granddaughter has a lovely Thanksgiving where she is and I pray you have a lovely Thanksgiving where you are.
ReplyDeleteMary, such a sweet story. It's those little blessings that God brands on her hearts. We can fall back on them when ever life hands us some heartache. Good post, fitting for I feel the same way often. I talked to my daughter by skype last night, she and family are in Papua New Guinea. When we hung up I was sad and still feel that way a little today. But I know He will bring me out of it again. Blessings my sister
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful post this is, Mary! And that song little Susannah sang... it IS a beautiful song for a 4 year old girl to sing. I am sure she has had her share of heartaches, but she surely understands what giving thanks means!
ReplyDeleteI am thankful for you friendship, dear Mary!
