Our Christmas Box

I wondered how we would feel about a Christmas Eve this year with emphasis on other’s pain and needs instead of a lot of gift giving among ourselves. Let me tell you, it really felt like Christmas! We attended the Christmas Eve service at church and came home to a simple, but elegant supper. We collected about fifty prayer requests from family, friends and blogging buddies. I’m proud of my family’s attitude that night and their compassion to touch heaven with their prayerful hearts as we opened the beautiful gold box under the tree and read each prayer request. We began with a great a verse from Job 5:9. “He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.” We prayed for healing for people struggling with cancer and other diseases. Some needed a financial miracle. Several needed prodigals to return home, family members’ salvation, on and on the needs were spoken. Our hearts were full and tears fell from our eyes. One of the kids reminded us that “where two o

Can You Hear Me Now?

In his book, A Simple Christmas , Mike Huckabee tells of his early childhood days and believes that the blasting Rock music he listened to in his early years at the highest volume levels attributed to his hearing problems today. Maybe that’s my problem. I’m a child of the sixty’s and I blasted my Rock ’n’ Roll “records”. It was hilarious to be in my kitchen this morning and hear my hubby’s and my exchange of words. “Say again?” must have been repeated a few times! We laughed! Last weekend I attended a memorial service for the dad of my friend, Sue. Afterwards, Sue invited us all to a sit down dinner with her and I sat next to my dear old friend, Herman, a man in his late 80’s. Herman probably didn’t listen to loud rock music in Germany where he grew up because even at his old age, he could hear better than I could. The nice thing is that older people are more patient with you than younger ones. Herman didn’t get out of sorts when he repeated his question for me more than once.

A Miracle Christmas

Our family chose our theme for Christmas Eve this year: A Miracle Christmas. Now we’re discussing our menu and choosing a heavenly dessert. What about angel food cake? It’s amazing how our themes over the past years have made a statement to our family, friends and neighbors of the joy of Christ’s birth and the freedom we engage in when we celebrate together. It all started over ten years ago at Thanksgiving when we all placed a theme in a basket and Father pulled out the winning suggestion for a Christmas Eve celebration. That first year the chosen theme was Germany and we had one month to study German Christmas traditions and foods we would prepare. The following years we got a little sillier with Cajun cooking complete with overalls and braids in our hair and blackened teeth. Then came an elegant Victorian Old-Fashioned Christmas, A Polish Christmas, and the year an Italian theme required us to dress up like the Sopranos. One year our girls invited one of their funniest college chums

The Holiday Decorator "Good news is that I truly out did myself this year with my Christmas decorations. The bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever. Great stories. But two things made me take it down.First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents. Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder, almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard. "Most people didn't see the humor in it... I got this funny from two email buddies this week! For more holiday humor, be sure to visit Kim at Homesteader's Heart.

Spiritual Sundays

SuperGlue and Jesus I’ll never forget celebrating my first Christmas as a born-again Christian, filled with the Holy Spirit. My oldest daughter toddled around and I was into story books and child-like fascination in those days. Evie’s Christian Christmas album just came out and I loved her song about the nativity scene where all the pieces come alive and dialog is exchanged among them. The holiday is personal to all of us individually. This year I wanted to ignore it. I was like Luther in John Grisham’s novel, Skipping Christmas , who wanted to take a cruise instead of preparing for a festive season. That was until yesterday. My DH was enjoying his day off and I watched him through the kitchen window bringing in boxes from the shed labeled “decorations” and “nativity”. If I wasn’t going to celebrate, he would take on the task without me. I joined him in carefully unwrapping the Lladro ceramic nativity set my mother made for me almost 30 years ago. It is my prized possession and I marv

A man is dining in a fancy restaurant and there is a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He has been checking her out since he sat down, but lacks the nerve to talk with her. Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket toward the man. He reflexively reaches out, grabs it out of the air, and hands it back. 'Oh my, I am so sorry,' the woman says as she pops her eye back in place. 'Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you,' she says. They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they go to the theatre followed by drinks. They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he shares his. She listens. After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast.. They had a wonderful, wonderful time.... The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings... The guy is amazed. Everything had been SO incredible! 'You know,' he said, 'you are th
